The original Renaissance was a period bursting with creativity, that began in the 14th century, lasting through the 17thcentury. During that time, European culture flourished with the immergence of trailblazing artists, scientists, intellectuals, writers, and explorers. The Renaissance also ushered in a return to classical literature, philosophy, and art.
Notable people of the Renaissance include Michelangelo, Dante, and Galileo, but perhaps the most famous of all was Italian artist, scientist, architect, engineer, sculptor, and intellect, Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo, with his broad-based interests and expertise, embodied the true Renaissance spirit.
One might wonder what relevance the Renaissance has today, but when digging deeper into the events that spawned this great epoch, it becomes surprisingly clear. Preceding the Renaissance was the Middle Ages, also known as the Dark Ages. The Dark Ages saw little in terms of artistic and scientific developments, and was a period of intellectual stagnation, known for being a time war, that was plagued by famine and pandemics.
Pandemics? War? Stagnation? Well, that sounds very current. History repeats itself but not only the bad things need to reoccur. It’s time to reemerge from the darkness that plagues today’s society, and to focus on the creativity that will brighten the world and ignite your own spirit.
